My review for Emily Mackie’s debut novel, And This is True, is now up here at Bookgeeks. Click here to read it.
I’m including this as my third book for the GLBT Challenge. Not only does it deal with some controversial issues – incest being one of them – but the homosexual relationship between father and son does bring up a lot of issues for both characters. Not only for the father, who has been away from society and female company for so long (and seems to try and make up for it during their first interaction with ‘real’ people) but also the son, Nevis, who is desperately struggling to find his own identity. Having never really interacted with with anyone but his father, it’s interesting to watch this obsession unfold. Nevis is in love with his father and doesn’t really know how to deal with any social situation on his own – especially when it comes to the young female character, Aisla, whose curiosity in the teenaged boy only blossoms.

I haven’t heard of this book, well at least I don’t think so. It sounds intense!
I had never heard of the book, but what an interesting review! I love novels that require patience to discover it completely.
It does sound like an interesting read Ceri. Great review over at bookgeeks.
Ooh that looks slightly disturbing…
[...] Least favorite book you read this year (so far?) Probably And This is True by Emily Mackie. I found it very much like the pieces I’d read in creative writing workshops in university. [...]
